They decorated the tree with candles and beautifully crafted, brightly painted, wooden chains. The boys had proudly made the chains from fine woods rather than the traditional paper.

Mama and the children began to dance around the tree, merrily singing and playing instruments to the tune of the traditional Norwegian song that signaled Papa's entry. As they sang, Papa came in with a bag of presents, set it down, and took turns dancing around the tree as well.
